Tennessee mosque project moves ahead

MURFREESBORO, Tenn., May 21 (UPI) — A Muslim congregation in Murfreesboro, Tenn., has obtained a building permit for a new mosque after a judge ruled against a group seeking to stop the project.

The 17 plaintiffs contended unsuccessfully that the mosque would violate their constitutional rights, The Daily New Journal in Murfreesboro reported. Their lawyer, Joe Brandon Jr., argued the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro members are required by their religion to repress non-Muslims,

“We must note that, under the law, the plaintiffs have not demonstrated a loss different from that which is common to all citizens of Rutherford County,” the local judge, Robert Corlew III, said in his ruling. “That Islam is a religion has been proven in this case. That the county ordinance allows construction of a church or place of meeting within a residential planning zone as a matter of right in this case is further undisputed.”

Islamic center chairman Essam Fathy said the congregation of about 250 area families obtained the building permit Friday and hopes to have the nearly 12,000-square-foot mosque completed within a year.

“We put our trust in our judicial system and always believe that truth and justice will prevail,” Saleh Sbenaty, a member of the Islamic center said. “We would like to thank the judge for his ruling, and we wish the community will put this behind us and be united again. We will work together for building bridges of understanding.”

President Obama welcomed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the White House Friday, one day after the president’s policy speech on the Arab world and Israeli-Palestinian relations called for a return to pre-1967 borders, a state Mr. Netanyahu called “indefensible.” After a closed door meeting, Netanyahu reiterated that “Israel has certain security requirements.”

Netanyahu met President Obama and in meeting in front of few journalists blantly and rejected the renewed efforts of President Obama . In his speech on Middle East yesterday President Obama had made his stand clear on Israel and Palestinian issue and made the 1967 border as precursor to peace process.

It was very odd and disrespectful to see Netanyahoo blatantly rejecting the proposal of President of United State of America not only on his face, but in front of whole world. This again demonstrate that Israel’s true colors and shows that it has no intentions on making true peace.

We at Muslim voice of America strongly support President Obama in his renewed effort towards Middle east peace process inspite of tremendous pressure from Israel and AIPAC, strong Jewish lobby. If Israel sincerely believes in peace and understands in all seriousness that status quo is not sustainable, then Israel needs to cease more than four decades of illegal occupation, annexation, blockade. Stop the continuous encouragement of Palestinian lands, put a stop to building of settlements, building of walls.
Israel refuses the 230 binding UN resolutions, it refuses One state solution, it refuses two state solution. Israel also refuses to sign the NPT treaty. Israel refuses the Palestinians’ right to come back home. It is high time that Israel realizes that more than 4 decades status quo is unsustainable and unacceptable in this age of political awakening around the world. World is watching, new generation is tired of all the excuses for maintaining status quo by denying Palestinians right of existence. It is high time Israel steps up. It is time…
